'Go West young man'... Jan 13th

San Francisco has always been one American city that I've always wanted to visit and I have to say, she didn't let us down. Words cannot fully describe how beautiful she is. Fresh air, vast blue skies, beautiful architecture, friendly people and a wonderfully colourful history. From the goldrush, to the invention of the cable car, to the 1906 earthquake, the city's rebuilding projects, the hippy era to the beauty it has today. Honestly Ale and I both instantly fell in love with the city. We finally felt like we had started our adventure and were heading out on our own, having left behind the comfort and security of our New York friends and family.

We spent one day on the hop on, hop off city tour bus which really was excellent - it put the layout of the city into perspective. We saw the 'painted ladies' (which were lovely) but spent more time at the dog park opposite while Sofia played with a host of local dogs :). The view was fabulous. I was stupidly excited as we approached and drove over the Golden Gate Bridge and back again. The weather was perfect so the entire Bay Area was laid out before us. Absolutely breathtaking.

We found a teeny tiny cafe in the Italian quarter called 'Melt' (excellent fondu) where a blues band was playing and a guy was singing Miles Davis songs in the corner. They all looked in their 50's and were performing for the pure pleasure. It was like finding treasure. It was right near the church where Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio had their wedding photos taken and down the block from the famous Lombard Street. The one where the angle of the hill is so steep that they created 8 hairpin turns weaving down the hill so the cars could navigate it safely. Crazy stuff.
